I rented one first and while it did a faster and better job than pole sanding, the beast nearly killed me while attempting to sand a 12' ceiling. Thin sheets of mdf with the smooth finish work well. It takes paint and joint compounded similar to drywall but it's lighter and thinner. You can get it less than a quarter inch thickness. For roof/celings some people have been using the aluminum foil backed poly-styrene (styro-foam) 4x8 boards the polished alum finish makes lighting much better and you get an r something advantage, then use the metal/alum tape for the seams it looks great and some of it comes with out a bunch of ad wrighting on it.
